Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance can be used to cover pretty much any dental treatment you can imagine, but the amount can vary based on what category the plan designates a procedure. Preventive services tend to receive the most coverage, while restorative services usually receive slightly less. Similar to medical insurance, your provider pays for part of a service based on the terms of your plan, and you’re expected to cover the balance at the time of service. Some plans also have copays and deductibles you have to meet before your benefits kick in as well.

What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?

Most of today’s dental insurance plans, no matter the provider, follow the “100-80-50” model of coverage, which looks like this:

  • Preventive services are covered 100% (checkups, cleanings, X-rays)
  • Basic restorative services are covered 80% (fillings, bonding)
  • Advanced restorative services are covered 50% (crowns, dentures, extractions)

Most people should use their plan to primarily pay for preventive care, as these services are not only completely covered, but they also allow our team to take care of minor issues early. Over time, this saves a patient from needing more expensive procedures while also safeguarding their oral health.

Our In-Network Dental Insurance Providers

Gentle Care Family Dental is in-network with a long list of dental insurance providers, which is great news for many patients, but what does it actually mean? Basically, we have a contract with each insurance provider to offer our services for pre-set (i.e. reduced) fees, and then the provider pays for part of them. For patients, this results in the highest level of savings possible as well as the quickest access to their benefits.

The following are just a few of the dental insurance carriers we're in-network with:

  • Aetna
  • Ameritas Life Insurance Corp
